Bordeaux
13/09/18 23:03
The internet connection in Bordeaux was not as good as elsewhere and that's my excuse for not writing more sooner. Our hotel was more of a building site, with the foyer covered in dust and protective coverings. Our room was recently renovated, however it was a size 1 room with size 3 furniture. The door could only be opened about 60 degrees before it hit the couch and the fixed shelf on the adjacent wall made it impossible to bring the cases in without laying them almost on the floor and 'posting them' through the gap. The breakfast matched perfectly. Lousy coffee, not enough of anything, including bowls and plates. The spoons however were enormous. Sue felt a bit like 'Edith Anne' using them.
The city of Bordeaux is beautiful. Almost all the buildings are constructed from limestone and there is a full restoration going on around the city to restore the older significant buildings to their former glory. Described by some as a mini Paris without the crowds. I concur. There are many open squares ringed by restaurants & bars and the locals are taking advantage of the last few weeks of good weather. Our driver on the two afternoon wine tours told us they like to "En Fait Une Terasse" (do a terrace). We can see why and joined in each lunchtime and evening.
On our second day we went with a small group (8) to St Emilion to visit two wineries. Both producing stunning red wine blends, the Chateau or A label was delicious if a bit out of our price range. The second tour to Medoc offered both an expensive but delicious wine at Chateau LaGrange, and a more affordable choice at Chateau Paloumey. I thought the Paloumey wine was just as nice but because it is not a Grand Cru classified appellation they do not command the same price nor does their land cost as much.

San Sebastian
11/09/18 23:06
Well it's all true. San Sebastian is a beautiful city. Although it was overcast and a bit wet for the first couple of days, this did not dampen our enthusiasm for the old city area and all of the Pintxos Bars and wonderful shops which offered good value. Sue was able to pick up a couple of items to add to her summer wardrobe. Our last full day was bathed in sunshine. The locals and tourists took full advantage of this. We saw a large marching band winding its way through the narrow streets to a large square where they entertained the crowd and themselves.
Nearer to the water front we found ourselves in a large group of immaculately dressed men, women and children. All attending one of two weddings. I particularly liked the massive Imperial wedding car.

3 Trains North
05/09/18 02:35
A tearful goodbye to our Mijas buddies as we wend our way to Malaga train station to hand back the car and catch the first of 3 trains that will take us to San Sebastian via Madrid & Pamplona. Arriving at 9:10 pm we opted for an in house meal and then to bed. The inevitable rain started as we hit the pillow and threatens to continue tomorrow so indoor pursuits may dominate.
Mijas Views & Shopping
04/09/18 23:22
Another trip to the beautiful village of Mijas to buy supplies for dinner and walk the ramparts of the highest square in the village. As we approached the local boys in blue directed us up to a main road that lead us to the opposite end of the village. Parking is restricted today owing to the preparations for the upcoming Fiesta. Fortunately we found a parking spot where we could leave the BMW 520 limo that the hire company decided to give me. I think it might have been their little joke. A large car is not much fun in car parks and on roads designed for small rice burners!
The local market closes for siesta at 2:00 p.m. and we hit it at 1:45 so the bargains were there for the taking. 8 large pork chops cut off the rib & a long string of chipolatas set us back 16 euros. Vegies and salad makings another couple of euros together with some very acceptable local wine for a further 6 euros.
Full on BBQ at Casa Helena tonight as we leave for northern destinations tomorrow. Cheers…

Up the Hill
04/09/18 18:45
An 8:00 departure from our villa saw the Farton Five walking up the 2.9km winding road to Mijas village. A challenge for the quads and calves rewarded by great coffee & pastries at the top. 41 floors up according to our phones. The walk back down was accompanied by a great sunrise which illuminated the village for our cameras. Back home for a breakfast and another fine coffee while we plan the rest of our day.
Mijas Exploring
03/09/18 03:00
After a fabulous breakfast of fresh fruit, Swiss muesli, croissants & coffee we all headed up to the town of Mijas which is bigger than we expected. All painted white by law the buildings reflect the light and make the smaller streets bright. Most homes have pot plants on frames hanging on the wall with various colourful flowers on display. At the moment the town is preparing for the festival that will start next week, so there are many decorations around the squares and adorning the streets overhead. Mijas is also a centre for quality leather goods. The prices are very flexible. Walking out of the shop is a great motivator for the vendor to try another price. So far only a wallet has been purchased. We will see what happens tomorrow.
